I would like to learn Amharic because in the near future I plan to visit, and ultimately relocate to Ethiopia. I am at a beginners level and very motivated! For the last few months I have studied personally but found that help is needed. I cannot reach the level of proficiency needed alone. I recently returned from an 11-day trip to China on business. I spent 100% of this time with members of a Shanghai-base d company who is likely to become a joint venture partner and with whom my company is likely to implement a project in 2011. As a result, I anticipate several immersive returns to China over the coming 6-12 months.
In preparation for my initial trip to China, I did study some basic language texts and did have the opportunity to practice very basic language with my hosts (which was received favorably!). Although I still consider myself very much of a beginner, I nevertheless have already begun to pick out words from spoken Mandarin and am capable of implementing some of my own sentence construction. My other language skills include fluency in French and Spanish as well as classroom instruction in Russian and Portuguese.
Regarding instruction, I am looking for weekly contact time of 1-2 hours with some supporting texts. However, based upon my travel schedule, there may well be weeks where I will be forced to put my contact time on hold (though perhaps some of this could be made up through video chatting, etc.). Although my initial focus will be on conversationa l skills, I nonetheless hope to begin taking the first, early steps towards character recognition as well.
