5 Language Learning Tips

5 Language Learning Tips

Hi guys, this is just a quick, short and sweet article regarding  tips on learning a foreign language (Portuguese or many other awesome ones).  These are my top 5 tips:

1-      Motivation: in Calgary we need motivation to get us out of bed when we know there are piles of snow out  there (challenge). We need motivation so we can do great tasks at work when everyone else doesn’t really care (focus). And so we need motivation to learn anything.

2-     Be good listeners: have you noticed babies when they soak everything in what’s being said around them? They know a lot by 8 months old, but they can’t yet formulated words but once they can… no mute button. That’s what we adults have to do more: listen to the foreign language just to get our hearing and brain used to the sound and used to the idea that we can actually learn a lot of new data no matter how old we are.
3-     Watch: movies, documentaries, talk shows, game shows, soaps, whatever you like to watch in your native language you should watch in your fav. foreign language. For example I like detective shows, so I know the plot: good guy, bad guy, etc. It’s a great way to keep focused on the story line instead of trying to force yourself to know every single word. Eventually with time, exposure, practice, and motivation you will know them.

4-     Speak up : by having motivation, being a good listener, watching your foreign shows you should be feeling really good and want to try out speaking. Do it !

5-     Get help: we can do so much with language software, some of them even have speech recognition, but in the end you will be speaking to real people. Get help with a real tutor to help you out to tune those weak spots: pronunciation, articulation, whatever else.

There are so many more tips out there to explore. Go get them and pick the ones that work better for you.

Learn lots and be unstoppable!
