by Jenn Smith

English Grammar Lesson 1: Nouns & Pronouns

At the end of this lesson you will be able to answer the following questions:

1. What is a noun?
2. What is a pronoun?

Let's Begin:

Question 1: What is a noun?

A: A noun is a word used to name a person, place or thing.

Ex. A. I went to the store
A store is a place. Therefore it is the noun in this sentence.

Ex. B. The waves crashed on the shore.
A wave is a thing, and the shore is a place. Therefore, they are both the nouns in this sentence.

Question 2: What is a pronoun?

A: A pronoun is a word that is used to replace a noun. You use pronouns like "he", "she", "it", "we" and "they" in place of nouns to make sentences less repetitive.

Ex. A. John ran fast. He wanted to win the race.
The word "John" is used to name a person, therefore, this word is a noun. The word "he" is used in the following sentence to replace "John. So, it is the pronoun that makes the sentence less repetitive.

Ex. B. The boys like chocolate. They eat it often.
The word "boys" is used to name several people, and the word "chocolate" is used to name a thing, so they are nouns . The word "they" is used to replace "boys"  and the word "it" is used to replace "chocolate" in the second sentence, therefore "they" and "it" are pronouns.

NOTE: Please use English Grammar Quiz 1 to practice using nouns and pronouns following this lesson.
