The verb estar is used to describe the temporary qualities of a thing or person. Is the state of the person or thing going to change? Then use estar. In terms of people, estar is used most often to describe mood or physical state or physical location.

Eu estou com fome.
I am hungry.

Ela está feliz.
She is sad.

Ele está em Roma. 
He is in Rome.

I am sick.

She has fever.
