The most common way to greet someone is 'namaste', used both for 'hello' and 'good bye'. In most cases it is followed by the respectful 'jii' (jee) as in 'namaste ji', 'namaste Mohan ji'. The way to greet someone can also be chosen according to their religion, a Sikh would use 'sat siri akaal' and a Muslim 'salaam alaikum'. 'Namaste' and 'namaskaar' derive from Sanskrit and they literally mean 'honour to you', they are spoken with joined hands and gently bending the head in a slight bow.
