When I propose to teach the Latin language, I try in the first place
to inspire in the student that studium (zeal, passion) without which
no study of any kind can hope to prosper. Lessons must be lively and
memorable. To this end I prefer the Orberg method and an emphasis on speaking, but with five years' experience of a number of teachers, methods and texts, my approach to perfect fluency, above all in reading, is flexible. All points of grammar and vocabulary are covered. |

Young children are able to learn a foreign language in somewhat the same way that native speakers learn it. That is, by immersion. It is good, therefore, to teach young children by means of vocabulary drills, reading, and listening, and give them some speaking and writing. Some things that can assist with learning through vocabulary, reading, and listening are pictures, comprehension questions, and stories that are already known by the children in their native language. Children can learn a foreign language better if they can put images and feelings to the words and sentences, and can associate the new language with people, places, events, and things in their own lives. The teacher can give students opportunities outside the classroom to practise speaking with the new language.
