Instructional Philosophy
Although I have high expectations of students, I take a kind and patient approach. Language learning is hard, time-consumin g work. The best way for students to be successful is through long term commitment to their goals with a teacher who knows their strengths and weaknesses and who can develop good strategies that meet the needs of each individual student.
My academic orientation is constructivis t. I believe that students must construct meaning for themselves, however, I see a lot of good in Chinese approaches to learning and education. That said, both of my children - now young adults - learned Chinese in traditional Chinese educational settings, and I think that in this age of technology, we have tools available to make instruction understandabl e. Students will not come away saying, "I don't know what the teacher was talking about in class today."

Adults and Children
I make extensive use of online resources and activities. My experience is that the most interesting, engaging and productive lessons are highly interactive. Instruction includes speaking, listening, reading and writing - with particular emphasis on conversation and pronunciation .
Childre n's Program
As a former public school teacher grades K-12 and college instructor, my special interest is in teaching, motivating and inspiring learners. Lessons are interactive and engaging and make use of print, text, and online resources. Although I am a female teacher, I have a lot of experience motivating boys and young men by using topics of special interest to them.
