    Teaching Approach

    Teaching Approach

I usually conduct lessons using Skype with online interactive whiteboard. But if the student wishes to learn through a different medium, such as email, I am prepared to do this also. The main benefit of Skype is being able to call a person in another part of the world for free. But there are other ways to do this also. By conducting lessons using a program like Skype the teacher can speak slowly and clearly for the learner, clearing any doubts. The learner can develop their active listening skills this way, which will accelerate their learning of Malayalam.
My teaching approach would change according to the student. However generally there would be emphasis on correct pronunciation as many of the 56 alphabets in Malayalam can be difficult to pronounce. My approach is more practical so there would also be an emphasis on learning lots of vocabulary and phrases used in the real world.

During lessons not only I will lead conversations , but the learner would be encouraged to lead based on their prior knowledge. This depends on how confident the learner feels but there would be lots of encouragement for the learner to come out of their comfort zone so that they can actually use what they have learnt and develop faster.

I would also set homework so that learning can take place outside of lessons as well. This would include practicing parts of the Aksharamaala (Malayalam alphabet), learning vocabulary, creating sentences, listening to different types of audio (based on the level of learner) and reading different types of text (if the learner would like to learn to read).

One of the keys to learning any language is lots of input through either listening or reading. This is why in my opinion learning to read and write in Malayalam will help the learner develop faster because they would be able to gain input through reading online Malayalam articles or books. The learner would be able to see the same vocabulary and grammatical phrases used again and again. This may seem difficult at the beginning but this struggle will pay off later.

If the learner does not wish to learn to read Malayalam we can use the English letters to represent the different Malayalam alphabets. For example mazha ( മഴ ) = ma + zha ( മ + ഴ ) = rain
മ = ma and ഴ = zha (you will need to hear this one to know how to pronounce) - so it is possible to express Malayalam with the English letters if you know how they sound and how to use your tongue in your mouth. However there are not many articles written this way so it will be difficult to gain as much input without learning the Malayalam alphabets.
Also listening to Malayalam at regular speed may just sound like noise at the beginning, but I would emphasise listening to music, the news, radio and T.V. programmes etc. as much as possible. This is because the learner's ears would get used to the sounds and something happens in our brain that makes the necessary connections to help us get familiar with the language. This is called passive listening. It is a big part of how all of us learned our mother tongues as babies. In the beginning active listening would probably take place during the lessons only but later as the learner develops their skills I would teach the learner tricks and tactics to use active listening outside of lessons as well. Patience and perseverance would be required but the tricks and tactics are simple, well known and they work.

Last ly, lessons would be fun because I also don't want to be bored during lessons. I have many ideas that would surprise even the most crazy person.

    Program Description

    1) During the first lesson the level and needs of the learner would be assessed. Based on this together we can decide on what needs to be focussed on.

    2) If the learner is a beginner, lessons would be more structured as we work to build a solid foundation in the language. There would be more focus on pronunciation and learning lots of vocabulary, as well as how to use these words in simple sentences. Through repetition, building on basic grammar and lots of input the learner will become familiar with the language.

    3) If the learner is more advanced, lessons would be less structured as the learner would have more freedom to converse due to already having a basic understanding in the language. We would focus on developing all areas required by the student. This includes conversationa l skills as well as reading and writing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Payment Policy

Pay ment is to be made weekly, in advance of the lessons to be taken that week. If the learner wishes they can make payments monthly, in advance. This will help reduce any transaction fees when transferring money.

The learner will be allocated times for their lessons which are to be followed each week. If a lesson needs to be cancelled, kindly inform me a day in advance. Fees for unattended lessons or lessons cancelled the same day as the class itself will not be refunded.

There are different ways to send payment. This includes PayPal, but there are other methods as well.

    Cost of Lessons

Cost of lessons is $15 per hour. Rs 500 per hour for Indian citizens.

I will reduce the cost of each lesson depending on how many times a week the learner wishes to take classes. More classes each week means a lower average fee for each class.
