    Teaching Approach

I am happy to tailor course and reading material to the student's interests, whether the interest in Latin and Greek is for secular or religious reasons. I am a trained chanter & reader for the Orthodox/Byza ntine tradition, so I am familiar with Koine & Classical Greek in the context of New Testament, Patristics and liturgical worship. I am also reasonably well-acquaint ed with the Roman Catholic and Western Church traditions, and have taught religious/sem inarians from various traditions.

For those who are interested in Latin/Greek for reading secular literature, entirely secular material can be used.

    Program Description

Private lessons in Greek (Homeric, Classical, Koine) and Latin (Classical, MediƦval) offered, at all levels, for all ages. Also available: Gothic and Coptic (Late Antique Egyptian).
Complete beginners welcome. I prefer to teach students on an individual basis, as I find this allows the student more flexibility in terms of learning speed, but am happy to teach groups of up to three or four.

Plea se email to discuss individual requirements and rates.

    Teaching Experience

I have over a decade of experience teaching Greek & Latin, both in Singapore and as a postgraduate teaching assistant at King's College London.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    - What textbook doy ou use?

For Latin, I use Reading Latin, by Peter Jones & Keith Sidwell, which provides for instruction up to A-Level standard. For Greek, I use the Athenaze series. These may be acquired off Book Depository or Amazon.

    - Where do you teach?

I'm happy to teach at a time and location suitable to both the student and myself. Starbucks, Coffee Bean, Kopitiam, Ya Kun Kaya Toast, HDB void decks have all been used in the past - I'm not picky. Location is generally not a problem, unless the student lives in Changi, Tuas, Woodlands or suchlike.

    - How many in a class, and how frequent are classes?

I usually teach one-on-one, as this allows the speed of the lesson to follow the ability of the student. I usually go a wee bit over an hour and I'm not a clock-watcher . I am happy to work with two or three students in a class, but find that often this makes scheduling difficult, particularly with working adults and students. Some students prefer to have an hour weekly, some prefer a 2hr session fortnightly, and both are possible. I have had students wanting to do Latin quite intensely - one did three classes a week for 6 months, but this is quite exceptional, both in terms of budget and scheduling.

    - How long does it take to master the language?

How long it will take to master the language is something of a difficult question to answer - much hinges on how fast we find we can progress, and this will of course depend on the student's ability to absorb new material. Also, how much time the student puts in outside of class will have an effect - homework and revision must be done outside of class time.

Lati n and Ancient Greek are not, of course, primarily taught as spoken languages, though of course one will find that one will be able to converse in simple Latin/Greek. The aim of my teaching is to enable the student to get reading skills up and running as soon as possible. Simple lines are possible after a few lessons, and students find that the chunks of original unadapted Latin/Greek in the textbooks get longer and longer.

    - I am hopeless at learning Chinese, how can I learn Latin/Greek?!

Experience with languages other than English is useful, particularly Sanskrit, or even Chinese or Malay, but not essential.
