    Teaching Approach


    Summarizing my profile, I am a passionate high-tech language teacher with great experience in teaching children and adults.
    In my current position, I work as a Teacher of Classics in an American Online Latin School , an accredited School by the Western Association of Schools for secondary and university students and on my own as well.At the same time, I have welcomed the opportunity to familiarize myself with the British educational system through the Cover Teacher role in a wide variety of secondary schools in Sussex. Taking this into consideration, I feel that I am in the right place, the right time and the right conditions which gives me a deeper understanding thus allowing me to learn something new every day.
    With more than 12 years’ experience as a Teacher of Classics, I have gained strong classroom management skills and the ability to build strong mentoring relationships with my students. My background includes teaching Greek , Latin and Writing to culturally and linguistically diverse students with or without learning disabilities who are -mainly- between 12 and 18 years old. As a result, I expanded my communication skills in order to understand their wants, their needs and their expectations.For more than 12years, I have been teaching as a private tutor, preparing Greek, ex-patriots and foreigners for several exams:

    -panhellenic university entrance exams for Greek and ex-patriots
    -Greek citizenship exams
    -Greek Language Certificates
    The increasing intensity of competition on university entrance exams and the necessity to constantly deal with deadlines has helped me to develop excellent organizational skills. At the same time, having joined a variety of educational organizations in Greece and in UK, that applied different teaching methods and curriculums has increased my adaptability.
    I have also funded an Educational Institute that promotes the Greek Language and Culture and combines learning with holidays in Greece.
    Besides my on-the-job experience, my inner need to stay up to date with the latest trends in the educational technology and to keep my skills sharp for the next generations, led me to the decision to study “Information Systems”.
    My Master dissertation, directed by Dr E.Tampouris who was listed among the 50 most activeresearchers in the world on his domain, is entitled “ Teaching Latin in a virtual, multi-user 3D environment”. As part of my thesis, I had to design and create an innovative educational game for learning Latin language in a 3D Virtual Collaborative Learning Environment using OpenSim technology and applying the pedagogical principals of collaborative learning. I am very confident in saying that so far this is the only multi-user-collaborative game ( in a 3D virtual environment) for Latin that exists online. With this research, I have been working to secure myself a place in the scholarly community and above all to make an impact on the way that Classics are being taught and this is exactly what differentiates me from most other teachers: I strive to link the past with the future and the newest technology with a rigorous study of the classics.

    Regarding my teaching approach, I am constantly looking for innovative and inspiring ways to teach. My aim is to develop reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills equally whilst combining traditional and communicative approaches to teaching. I particularly enjoy creating a joyful and creative atmosphere in the classroom by applying principals of game-based learning and by using modern software. My studies in Philology combined with my Master in Information Systems, have given me the knowledge to enhance learner's experience using effectively Technology in online and face to face courses!
    The latest addition in my teaching approach is the Latin and Ancient Greek conversation!
