    Teaching Approach

I believe it is important for students to have a basic understanding of a language's fundamental grammar, pronunciation , written form, and the differences between the target language and the student's native language first and foremost. When I teach Japanese to beginners, I start with the basic properties of the language before going into sentence construction and learning phrases.

F or ESL students, I find out what part of language learning they are having difficulty with and focus on improving that part while still practicing English in general.

    Program Description

When teaching Japanese for beginners, I start with a basic introduction to the language itself, mostly how it differs from English. After the students have a general idea about Japanese pronunciation and how the writing system works, I move on to building vocabulary and common phrases, followed by grammar elements.

When tutoring students at the Intermediate level of Japanese or students who are learning English as a second language, I find out what they are having the most difficulty and will emphasize that part during tutoring.

    Teaching Experience

I am a college graduate from the University of California Irvine. I obtained a B.A. in East Asian Languages & Literature, with emphasis on Japan and Japanese. I have taken 2 years of Japanese at community college, 2 years at UC Irvine, and studied the language abroad for a month in 2006. I have completed the Level 3 JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) and participated in many Japanese-rela ted clubs and events during my college years. My Japanese is at a high-intermed iate/low-advan ced level; I have an excellent grasp of Japanese grammar and I am working on building my vocabulary and kanji ability. At my former job, I taught Japanese to elementary school children in a YMCA after-school program.

I n addition, I have experience teaching English as a second language (ESL). I was a teacher assistant for an ESL class in high school, took a class about teaching ESL at my university, and have informally tutored various native Japanese students who I have met over the years. I have also tutored elementary school children in reading and spelling for two years at my previous YMCA job and informally through private tutoring clients.
