Hi,
I am looking to learn Cantonese. I have no knowledge of the language (don't even know how to say hello). I am doing an exchange program in January 2007 and will be living in Hong Kong for 5 months, I am hoping to learn the basics from now (April) until December. My biggest goal is to be able to at least have a conversation with the locals in Hong Kong.
I need a patient and well knowledgeable teacher who has experience working with people who know nothing about the language.

Hello.
My proficiency level is probably beginner/inte rmediate. I was born in Canada and have never been taught to read or write at all in Chinese. As for my verbal skills, I can talk to some people (I think I speak Tai San?) but often have difficulty understanding .
I want to learn so that I can better communicate with friends and family. As well, I'm kind of tired of my friends looking to me to order at Chinese restaurants just because I'm Chinese-Canad ian only to be disappointed when I can't.
As for the amount of time I'd want to dedicate to lessons, I think that would be determined by how I progress. I'd like to get to a point where I could be comfortable with the language and a lot of that depends on how your training is done.
With respect to qualities I'm looking for in lessons and yourself, I'd like to be trained by an instructor who will be able to adjust their program based on the ability of the student and also someone who will develop a program that allows the student to study independently when not being tutored.
