Description |
I would like to learn the Chinese Cantonese language so that I may verbally communicate with my significant other's family, and learn a non-Latin based language and potentially culture. My boyfriend was born in Hong Kong and he and his family have been in the United States for quite some time. He and I have been together for a year and a half, and we have both met each other's families. I speak, read, and write fluently in Spanish, which was a second language that I learned throughout and after high school. I am very passionate about learning new languages and cultures and have excelled in every language course I have taken. I work as a professional pastry chef and I enjoy traveling and working in new places. Not only would learning Cantonese be beneficial to my communication with my boyfriend's family, it would also serve as a great skill to have in my career as a chef when I work in new countries.
I do not currently speak or read any Chinese(with the exception of the numbers 1-10 that my boyfriend taught me). Although I seem to pick-up language very easily, I would prefer a more formal training so that I can build a strong foundation be proficient in my speaking, reading, and writing skills. I have a few Cantonese CDs that just don't elaborate on the language structure at all--it is all vocabulary. I would like to make sure that I can properly disect the language since it is not Latin based like my native language. This would allow me to better understand grammar, tones, and general word/sentence structure usage-all essential for effective communication .
I would prefer in-person lessons but I would be willing to possibly do phone or skype lessons just to try it. I am a very visual learner and I must see something written on paper to be able to understand, retain, and repeat information. I would be looking for an instructor who is proficient enough in English to make comparisons between structure and learning the tones as seem less as possible. I am looking for a more in depth education of the Cantonese dialect, as I plan to become fluent.

Description |
I am trying to learn how to read and write in Cantonese so that I can communicate with other people on the Internet who can help me with my linguistic research. I know how to read a lot of words, but there are still a lot of words I do not know. There are a lot of phrases, especially formal phrases, and more literary phrases, older phrases that people don't use much anymore that I have not heard of and do not understand. However, I would like to learn them.
I grew up in Canada from a family with a Cantonese background and have some trouble memorizing the shape of Chinese words and choosing the right one for the right context.
I would like to spend one hour a week to learn. I am looking for a teacher who is enthusiastic about teaching Cantonese. If possible, I would also like to ask questions about older Chinese dictionaries, and I want to understand the classic poem with 1000 words.
