Gender of Nouns

Unlike English, nouns in Bulgarian have gender. The gender of the nouns is determined by their endings. Masculine nouns typically end in a consonant. учебник (textbook) ключ (key) Exceptions: some masculine nouns end in feminine or neuter endings. All of them refer to human beings. роднина (relative) татко (daddy) Feminine nouns end in -A or -Я. Some feminine nouns end in -ACT or -OCT. баба (grandmother) леля (aunt) маса (table) къща (house) власт (power; authority) страст (passion) младост (youth) Exceptions: most feminine nouns follow the pattern described above. There are some, however, that are an exception to the rule. вечер (evening) нощ (night) заповед (commandment) сутрин (morning) любов (love) Neuter nouns end in -O or -E. момче (boy) море (sea) легло (bed) Foreign words that do not have the typical noun endings are also neuter. меню (menu) такси (taxi) кенгуру (kangaroo) |
