It's safer to use 'hello' in a more formal setting, and when meeting strangers for the first time. 'hi' is used more in the USA. 'hi' is better used with another word 'hi there!' or 'hi George'. 'Hey' and 'heya' can be substituted but they don't strictly mean 'hello' either.
Instead of "Konnichiwa", in English we say "Hello (formal), hi (less formal)"
