Dear Sergev,

Many thanks for your offer. Where would you like me to start in teaching English? What is the level of your present knowledge? Depending on this we can decide.

My Russian is also not very good. I have given the Russian Translation of this hereunder. I am learning Russian from a text book by V.N. Wagner and Y.G. Ovisenko recommended for Indian students by Indo Soviet Cultural Society. I have done upto lesson 48 in this book. I hope you will understand the translation or at least the sense of it. If there are mistakes kindly ignore them and advise me how to correct.

Hi Beckey,

I would be more than happy to teach you Urdu and Hindi. You are right that Hindi and Urdu are similar. The only differences are: (1) While Urdu is written in the Arabic script (with few characters improvised to accomodate additional sounds) Hindi is written in the Devnagari script. (2) There are more Arabic and Farasi words in Urdu than in Hindi which has more of Sanskrit words. Both are Indic languages.

Where would you like me to start? -the alphabets-words-sentences-grammar-etc. etc.I am not very conversant using the Urdu script and am using only Devnagari script which is also the common script for Hindi, Marath, Sanskrit. I can ofcourse send you alphabets of Urdu scrpts as well.

I am panning to become a gold member and will love to send you materials (gratis) for helping you learn Hindi/Urdu.

Although I am from India presently I am in U.S.A. upto Feb. 26 with my children and grand children

Re:Re:Re:Re:Practising Russina-Learning English, Gujarati, Marathi, Hindi

Dear Sergev,

Many thanks for your reply. Let us straight away start talking in English-writtten of course! In the first place I will point out to you the corrections in the two messages you have sent:
(1) Inthe first message:In English the word I (ya) is always in capital (upper case)whereever it comes in the sentence-not as in Russian at the beginning of the sentence only.

(2) In your second message the sentence: "If you the gold member. You can find my e-mail address in my profile"

(a) Verb 'are" is required after the word "you" (the second word of your sentence) without verb the sentence is grammatically incorrect.

(b)) After the word "member" (fourth word) there should be coma and the succeeding Y of "You" has to be lower case as it will not be at the beginning of the sentence

(3) I suggest you keep on writing to me in whatever way you can in English and I will keep advising you he corrections-you can also write about the current events in your country. Wherever convenient I will give Russian equivalent also.

I too am learning Russian on my own though recently I have found a teacher in India who has done her Ph.D. in Moscow University. Since I have come to U.S.A. I have not been in her contact for about five months now. I will contact her again on my return to India by month end.

I could not read the Russian text of your message. I do no know how to convert the script showing on my screen to Russian fonts. I have inquired with the web site people. I will try to send you the Russian translation of this letter very shortly. Were you able to read the Russian script on your computer screen?

Hi Sudhir.

Your general mistake it is your grammar you need more talk in online.I pay 6$ soon and we can talk in online mode.I understand your first message.Your need make Russian fonts.Your need read many books. One book is not enough.
Russian grammar very difficult. it is a lot contradictions in rules.
Set russian fonts and i say your mistakes on russian grammar.
Learn words by heart and train in a spelling.
I have 2 questions for you?

Re:Re:Re:Re:Re:Re:Practising Russina-Learning English, Gujarati, Marathi, Hindi

Dear Sergy,

It was nice to read your response.I hope I have spelled your name correctly now.

Besides Wagner & Ovisenko I have three other books: (1) Ðóööêèè Öàìîöòîÿòåëüíî -ÅÂàñèëåíêî è Å Ëàìì (2) Russian Urok Made Easy by Dr. Suniti Deshpande Ph. D. (Indian Authoress) and (3) Russian Part I by Nina Potapova.

You are right when you say that I need a lot more to read. My efforts are continuing.

Your questins:

Ph. D. means 'Doctor of Philosphy' Ph. is for Philosophy and D is for Doctor. This is the highest Academic degree in any field of learning. Russian Scientist Mendeleyev also was Ph. D. (I bewleive in Chemistry).

In U.S.A. I and my wife are staying with our children and grand children. My son has done his Ph. D. in Civil Engineering (structures) and my daughter is a Certified Public Accountant in U.S.A. She was a Practising Chartered Accountant in India and had also obtained a Law degree in India before coming to U.S.A.My son-in-law has done his Ph. D. in Pharmacology in U.S.A. My son is in New York and my daughter in Connecticut. I was myself practising in India as Chartered Accountant and have now retired. Six months I stay with my children and six months in India.

How about your activities? What studies you are persuing? I suggest that you also read some English News Papers on the web site. For instance the New York times- The imes of India-there are a lot other magazines and News Papers. I also attempted reading Pravada on the web but my Russian vocabulary is extremely limited and I find it hard to decipher the meanings of the words. I hope your English vocabulary is better than my Russian vocabulary.

I have already sent my check for Gold Membership and hope to soon send you e mail as soon as the membership is activated. I hope to send you the Russian translation of this and the earlier letter shortly- I have been rather lazy.

Yours truly,

Sudhir Mehta

Àíãëèñêèé Ïåðåâîä:

February 10, 2005

Dear Sergy,

I reply to your letter of February 7, 2005 in Russian with English translation. This will improve my Russian language knowledge.

If you need any help in your study of Accountancy I will be able to give.

India's climate is warm - we live in Bombay. In Bombay temperature is between 15° to 35° degrees centigrade (81° to 118° F). It is vey hot in summer.

I am waiting for photographs of your territory. I will send to you photographs of Bombay when I return to India.
I thank you very much for the corrections in my Russian writing.

I now tell you your mistakes:

1.' I am lived in Siberia' -verb 'am' is present tense verb and verb 'lived' is a past tense verb. This is grammatical mistake. It should be 'living'., as participles in Russian.

2. And then again cold- In English, normally, a sentence does not start with the word 'and'. It is a conjunction joining two phrases in a sentence.- Grammatical mistake.

3. your gold member is acivated i send you photos our territory- (a) A new sentence always starts with a capital letter (b) word ' acivated' is wrongly spelled. It should be activated.(c) gold member- this should be gold membership 9d) the word I is always a capital letter when used in the sense Russian "ÿ".

My questions:

1. What is the difference between the words "âàñ" è "âàøåãî"; "ìîè" è "ìîåãî"?
2.O what longitude and latitude Mengion in Siberia is situate?
3. What is the population?
5. What are the main industries?

Please correct my mistakes in Russian.

Yours truly,

Sudhir Mehta

Dear Sergy,
I have seen your message of 1st March 2005. I returned to India on 27th Feb. 2005 and had not been able to see the Bulletin Board for last two-three days owing to jet lag and some pressure of work which accumulated owing to six months absence from India.

I have not received your e mail/authorization. My gold membership is also likely to be activated soon. I like to read your messages.
Please keep writing.

I am shortly sending you the best Russian translation I can make of this and my earlier message. I will also then show you your mistakes in English in your messages.

MARCH 9, 2005

Dear Sergey,

Many thanks for your reply of the 9th MArch 2005 and for all the trouble you are taking in correcting mistakes in my Russian writing.
I have been informed today by Language Exchange that my Gold Membership will be activated on the 17th March-so it is only a question of one week. I will thereafter send to you direct e mails and you can also do likewise.

I suggest you continue writing in English. This is really useful in improving the language.

You have however not answered my requests for informing me more about yourself and your surroundings. Please do so.

I will try to send you the Russian translation of this shortly. Hope you will continue talking to me.
