American looking for great films
In the states we are inundated with US block busters, but have very little opportunity to see great foreign cinema. Of course there are always the video rental stores. Please, can you post the names of some of your favorite films so that we can expand our horizons a bit. Also, if you have any films you can recommend for young children we would appreciate it. Thanks.

Re:American looking for great films
Dear Jennifer,
I agree with you,I am a filmmaker that made a family oriented movie last year in Cambodia.
I am trying to make 2nd one, more or less using the same recipe, get non professional crew/actor, train them up and make a very low budget movie.
It's in a process to dub my movie and use some original music, hopefully this will be done in middle on 2004.

please look for movies from Iran, most of them are children movie, but they are heavy and often wins film festival awards.

one movie from china coem to my mind is "carrying PAPA to school"

last --- IHMO -- De Sica's "Bicycle Thief"

enjoy

Re:American looking for great films
How right you are.

Danish: BABETTE'S FEAST - ok family, food odyssey
Japanese: SHALL WE DANCE - ok family, ballroom dancing, very funny
Spanish: GOYA IN BORDEAUX - His later years, incl. nudity
Check: DEVIDED WE FALL - WW II, young couple's sacrifices to save a Jewish man
Just make sure you have descriptions of the movies, so you can judge viewability for younger family members. A movie like 'Amores Perros', though excellent in some ways, may be hard to watch for some people because of the dog fighting scenes.

Re:Re:American looking for great films
Some more to add to the list. I wouldn't say these were for children but they are all enjoyable films.

Spanish

The Lovers of the Arctic Circle
The Red Squirrel
Cows!

Japanese

Battle Royale
Audition
The Happiness of the Katakuris (if you can handle the idea of a musical horror)

German

Run, Lola, Run!
Anatomy
The Princess & The Warrior

Danish

The Idiots (has sensitive subject matter, though)
Italian for Beginners

French
Amelie (as someone has already written above)
Delicatessen
The City of Lost Children
Irreversible (has sensitive subject matter)
Jean de Florette
Manon des Source (Jean de Florette: Part 2)

I'm listing films from my DVD collection as I can recall them but there's loads more.

Try and look for sites on European Film Festivals e.g. Berlin

Other films:

The Eye (Thailand)
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Korean)
Goodbye, Lenin! (German)
My Life as a Dog (Swedish)
Reykjavik 101 (Icelandic)
Hana-bi (Japanese)

The 2 Mexican films listed above are must sees also.

Re:American looking for great films
I personally loved "Europa, europa", with Juliette Delphy, though I'm not sure which country it's from. A lot of my other favs have been mentioned as well. Hope this helps.

Russian films, etc.
I have a web page with a long list of excellent Russian films (plus a list of films from other countries). If you write to me, I`ll let you know the site URL (here it is not allowed) and where to find these films.
