Not a very good joke :S Here's a better one:
An astronaut visits a remote planet and meets intelligent alien life. As two aliens make him visit their city, he notices something about the population and asks the two aliens about it:
"I noticed that people around here sometimes laugh after someone told them a number. I don't understand what makes them laugh.
- Oh, it's simple," answers one of them. "We, aliens, like to tell each other jokes. But sometimes they're too long to tell and some of us have tight schedules. So we numbered all the existing jokes, and instead of telling the whole story, we just say the associated number so that the other person remembers the joke and laughs. It's shorter this way. It's easy, you should try!
